about

The lyrics of this track are a poem by my dear friend, Grace Wells. The poem impacted me, and eventually inspired this song.

lyrics

Her mother's face said it was a brown and shabby thing
second hand and quite beneath them
Her father mumbled there'd been something similar
in his youth, lost with the years
Sisters admired it but wouldn't try it on
Brothers borrowed it
left it out in the rain
Friends were never sure what to think,
tried not to be seen with it in public
Lovers stowed it in the wardrobe's depths,
during quarrels, attacked it with their knives

But she danced in it with her children
let their tiny hands stroke the wondrous cloth
And time came when she wore it every day
Slept in it, woke each morning fully clothed.
